About The magazine
The Chronicles project was conceived in 2022 by the editorial team of the European Manga Academy in a room in a medieval tower in Volterra, Italy, high above the Tuscan clouds.
Over the course of fifteen years of teaching, it became clear that creating manga does not require being Japanese. Understanding the mechanisms and techniques involved is far more important.
After the first draft, the editorial team was overwhelmed by larger, more urgent projects, and the Chronicles project was put on hold until today.
Why “Chronicles”?
One of the issues that the creative team had to address, but kept putting off, was what to call the project. For convenience, we started calling it Chronicles, and over the years we made several attempts to find a better name, until the time came to promote the magazine among authors and sponsors.

What makes Chronicles unique?
The magazine celebrates the vibrant creativity of international artists by showcasing diverse stories from around the globe.
Each issue features captivating stories, presented in a reader-friendly left-to-right format with a distinctive tobira-e opening.
The goal is to not only attract those who are already familiar with Japanese manga, but to expand our reach to the average person too.
We truly believe manga to be an amazing means of communication and want to help bring more non-Japanese stories to life, to have the audiences engage in something that feels closer to home while retaining all of the characteristics of manga technique.
So: no forced right-to-left reading done by authors whose eyes naturally move in the opposite direction. No Japanese onomatopoeias translated with verbs instead of actual sounds just to make it “look more manga”. Just authentic contents, creativity, and passion.
